The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has a reason to celebrate this Fourth of July. The department is thrilled to announce that there were no traffic fatalities during the long weekend leading up to the Fourth of July, and on the holiday itself.
This achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of HDOT’s various safety campaigns, such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click it or Ticket It,” and “100 Safe Days of Summer.” These initiatives have clearly resonated with motorists across the State of Hawaii, leading to safer roads and highways.
HDOT, along with its partners – the four county police departments, and other first responders – extend their gratitude to everyone for prioritizing safety on the road. The last recorded traffic fatality in Hawaii was on Hawaii Island on June 18, marking 19 consecutive days without a single traffic-related death.
Ed Sniffen, the Director of HDOT, expressed his satisfaction with this progress. “Our goal every January 1st is zero fatalities for the year. Right now, we are at 19 days straight without one, so let’s keep it going until we string together 365 without a fatality,” he said.
However, the journey towards safer roads is far from over. As of now, the statewide fatality total for the year stands at 46, broken down by county as follows:
- C&C of Honolulu: 28
- Hawaii County: 10
- Kauai County: 1
- Maui County: 7
In 2022, Hawaii recorded 116 fatalities on its roadways, with 9 in July and 10 in August. The summer months often prove to be the deadliest of the year on the roads.
HDOT, along with police partners and emergency responders across the state, continues to urge drivers to buckle up, obey the speed limit, and refrain from drinking and driving. The collective goal is to ensure a safe remainder of the year for all road users in Hawaii.
