Betty’s Beach Cafe is Shut Down Due to Cockroach Infestation

In a swift action to ensure public health, the Hawai‘i Department of Health’s Maui Food Safety Branch has ordered the immediate closure of Betty’s Beach Cafe, a much-loved dining destination in Lahaina. The café, situated at 505 Front Street, #120, Lahaina, is managed by J. Group Corp and found itself on the receiving end of a red “Closed” placard due to a troubling cockroach infestation. This decision was the result of a series of inspections, both prompted by a complaint and routine, conducted on July 27, 2023.

The Initial Report

An initial inspection on July 25, 2023, triggered by an anonymous complaint about cockroach sightings at the front bar, revealed unsettling signs of an infestation. While some areas behind the kitchen appliances were hard to reach, the investigation team did identify considerable cockroach activity and several other significant violations. Consequently, the restaurant was given a yellow “Conditional Pass” placard as a stern warning.

Two Days Later a Follow-Up

In a follow-up inspection that took place just two days later, on July 27, 2023, the inspectors discovered a rampant cockroach infestation. This included the presence of both juvenile and adult cockroaches in refrigeration units and around various surfaces that come into contact with food. This shocking revelation led to the immediate shut down of the café to protect the wellbeing of the public.

In order to be considered for reopening, the Department of Health (DOH) has outlined a rigorous set of corrective actions that Betty’s Beach Cafe must implement. The restaurant is expected to hire a professional pest control company to eliminate the infestation, seal off all potential insect entry points in the walls, and conduct an in-depth clean-up of the kitchen and bar areas to remove accumulated grease and food debris. Another inspection has been scheduled for July 31, 2023, to assess the situation.

The Department of Health’s Food Safety Branch remains devoted to its mission of ensuring the safety of Hawai‘i’s residents and visitors. They consistently regulate food establishments statewide and carry out routine health inspections. Such vigilant efforts aim to prevent the spread of food-borne diseases and promote safe food handling and preparation practices in all food establishments across the state.
