Concern Over Acquisitions Rise Amid Maui Struggles

In the wake of the devastating wildfires that swept through Maui, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak, the Hawaiian community is rallying together to support the affected residents and ensure a sustainable and respectful recovery process. The recent events have not only highlighted the strength and resilience of the Hawaiian people but have also raised concerns about potential predatory practices targeting vulnerable homeowners amid Maui struggles.

The Devastation in Numbers

Governor Josh Green, in his address on the Maui Wildfire Disaster, painted a grim picture of the catastrophe. Fires, exacerbated by hurricane-force winds, ravaged the historic town of Lāhainā and other parts of Maui. Over 2,200 buildings were destroyed, with damages estimated at nearly $6 billion. But beyond the material losses, the human toll is immeasurable. The death toll has surpassed a hundred, with search and rescue operations still underway.

Lāhainā, a town with a rich history that dates back to the time of King Kamehameha I, witnessed its beauty and heritage being consumed by the flames in less than a day. The tragedy is described as the deadliest fire the country has seen in over a century.

As the community grapples with the aftermath, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) has issued a warning to homeowners. There are growing concerns about predatory buyers looking to exploit the situation by purchasing properties at below-market prices. Homeowners are urged to be wary of unsolicited offers and to report any suspicious activities to the DCCA’s Office of Consumer Protection and the Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO).

Mana Moriarty, Executive Director of the Office of Consumer Protection, emphasized the commitment to protecting vulnerable homeowners. The office is prepared to investigate any reported misconduct and prosecute wrongdoers to the fullest extent of the law.

Esther Brown, Complaints and Enforcement Officer for RICO, further cautioned homeowners against unsolicited offers, urging them to be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true.

Support and Recovery Efforts

The state government, in collaboration with federal agencies and local communities, has launched extensive relief and recovery operations. The Hawai‘i National Guard, first responders, and volunteers are working tirelessly to provide aid, search for survivors, and secure fire-damaged areas.

Governor Green has also ensured that Maui receives all available resources from the federal government and other sources. President Biden has been particularly supportive, offering resources and issuing a Presidential Disaster Declaration promptly upon request.

To assist those affected, over 2,000 housing units have been secured on Maui. The American Red Cross and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation are also actively involved in relief efforts, ensuring that donations reach those in need.

He also warned against any attempts to exploit victims by acquiring property in the affected areas, with enhanced criminal penalties in place for such offenses.
