If you find yourself exploring the North Shore of Oahu, make sure to take a culinary detour and immerse yourself in the local flavor at the Kahuku Sugar Mill Food Trucks. Offering a diverse array of cuisines and unique dishes, the Kahuku roadside food court and food trucks have become a go-to spot for locals and tourists alike. The Kahuku Sugar Mill is not only steeped in the history of Hawaii’s sugar industry but has also evolved into a vibrant hub of authentic food and culture.
A Taste of Hawaii’s History
Before diving into the mouth-watering offerings of the food trucks, it’s worth reflecting on the history that surrounds you. The Kahuku Sugar Mill was an active sugar plantation from the mid-19th century until its closure in 1971. Today, the towering, rusted mill structure stands as a testament to Hawaii’s agricultural past. In recent years, the grounds around the mill have transformed into a bustling food scene. The blend of historical and modern elements creates an ambiance that is distinctly Hawaiian.
Culinary Delights on Wheels
In the shadow of the old mill, you’ll find a smorgasbord of food trucks offering an eclectic variety of dishes. From fresh seafood to Hawaiian specialties, Asian fusion, and indulgent desserts, there’s something for every palate. Most of these trucks are located in the Kahuku Roadside Food Court.
Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck is an institution in Kahuku. Renowned for their scampi-style shrimp cooked with heaps of garlic and lemon butter, Giovanni’s is a must-visit for seafood lovers. Even the graffiti-covered exterior of the truck is a testament to its popularity among locals and visitors.
One of our personal favorites at the food court is Deez Bowls. This truck, located behind Giovanni’s is now open 7 days a week and offers a great plate, er, bowl!
Another popular stop is Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp, boasting farm-raised shrimp from their own aquaculture farm. Try their sweet and spicy shrimp, which offers a delightful contrast of flavors. This location is just up the road from the official food court, but you can’t miss all the tour buses parked here.
For a taste of traditional Hawaiian cuisine, you can’t miss Hi BBQ. Here, you’ll find Hawaiian BBQ chicken and beef, as well as the much-loved kalua pork, traditionally cooked in an underground oven.
Vegetarians and health enthusiasts aren’t left out, with stops like Seven Brothers “at the Mill” offering vegetarian burger options and refreshing smoothies. Recently, Seven Brothers has also opened up a general store where the old gas station used to be, and it has THE BEST cookies.
Finally, save room for dessert. Wicked Hi Slush serves up Hawaiian-style shave ice in a variety of flavors, while Uncle Woody’s Corn offers a different kind of sweet treat with their sweet corn, cooked and slathered in butter.
Experiencing the Local Culture
Beyond the delicious food, the Kahuku Sugar Mill food trucks offer an immersive cultural experience. Each food truck is owned and operated by passionate local chefs who bring their unique flair to the dishes they prepare. Their friendly, Aloha spirit shines through in their food and customer service.
Visiting the food trucks is a casual and communal experience. With shared picnic tables and an open-air atmosphere, you can enjoy your meal amidst the pleasant Hawaiian weather and strike up a conversation with fellow diners. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet locals, fellow travelers, and hear the stories and inspiration behind the food.
In addition to the food, there is a new skate park open on site!
