Hawaii Faces Unprecedented Wildfires Fueled by Hurricane Dora

Hawaii, known for its pristine beaches and tropical paradise, is currently grappling with an unprecedented disaster. Wildfires, fueled by the strong winds of Hurricane Dora, have wreaked havoc across the islands, prompting state officials to take swift action.

Emergency Proclamations Issued

Acting Governor Sylvia Luke, on behalf of Governor Josh Green, M.D., issued an emergency proclamation in response to the wildfires in Maui and Hawaiʻi Counties. The wildfires, intensified by Hurricane Dora churning south of the islands, have prompted the state to activate the Hawaiʻi National Guard to support emergency responders in the affected communities. The emergency proclamation authorizes several actions, including the activation of the National Guard, appropriate actions by the director of the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency, and the expenditure of state general revenue funds for relief efforts.

In addition to the wildfires, the state has also issued an emergency proclamation to extend the state of emergency to all counties, discourage non-essential air travel to Maui, and order all affected state agencies to assist with evacuations. This move is to prioritize resources for Maui residents who desperately need assistance.

FEMA Approves Assistance for Kohala Blaze

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the State of Hawai‘i’s request for a disaster declaration to provide assistance with the Kohala Ranch wildfire on the Big Island. This decision under the Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) program allows for federal reimbursement of up to 75% of the eligible firefighting costs. The fire threatened about 200 homes in and around Kohala Ranch and other critical infrastructure, including a volunteer fire department, local electrical transmission lines, and an AT&T cellular communications tower.

Governor Green Returns Home

Governor Josh Green, M.D., recognizing the severity of the situation, is returning home immediately to address the wildfire emergency affecting Maui and Hawai‘i Counties. The Governor has been in constant contact with the leadership team, including Acting Governor Sylvia Luke, and has also been in touch with the White House in anticipation of a request for emergency federal assistance.

Maui HDOA Offices Closed Due to the severe wildfires, all state offices on Maui were closed on Aug. 9, 2023. This includes the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture offices on Maui. However, Plant Quarantine inspections for airport and maritime shipments continued as usual.

The state of Hawaii is currently facing one of its most challenging times. The combined effects of Hurricane Dora and the subsequent wildfires have put a strain on resources and displaced many residents. State officials and emergency responders are working tirelessly to manage the situation and provide relief to those affected. The aloha spirit remains strong, with communities coming together to support one another during these trying times.
