Hiking the Alakai Swamp Trail

If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding hike in Hawaii, the Alakai Swamp Trail is definitely worth considering. Located on the island of Kauai in the Kokee State Park, this 7-mile round-trip hike takes you through a beautiful and diverse landscape of wetlands, forests, and high-elevation grasslands.

The Alakai Swamp Trail

The Alakai Swamp Trail is not for the faint of heart – it’s a strenuous hike that requires a good level of physical fitness and the ability to navigate muddy and uneven terrain. But for those who are up for the challenge, the rewards are well worth it.

Start at Puu O Kila Lookout

The trail begins at the Puu O Kila Lookout, which offers breathtaking views of the Kalalau Valley and the Pacific Ocean. From there, the trail descends into the Alakai Swamp, a 4,000-acre wetland that is home to a variety of plant and animal life.

As you make your way through the swamp, you’ll pass through a dense forest of koa, ohia, and other native trees. Keep an eye out for colorful native birds like the apapane and iiwi, as well as the rare and endangered Kauai oo, a type of native forest bird.

Muddy and Challenging

As you hike deeper into the swamp, the terrain becomes muddier and more challenging. The trail crosses a series of wooden boardwalks and bridges that help you navigate the wet and boggy ground. Be sure to watch your step and take your time, as the trail can be slippery and uneven.

After about 3 miles, you’ll reach the end of the Alakai Swamp Trail at the Kilohana Lookout. From here, you’ll have panoramic views of the Waimea Canyon, the Kalalau Valley, and the surrounding mountains. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a snack before turning back.

The Return is Strenuous

The return trip is just as challenging as the hike out, so be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you fueled. The total hike takes about 6-8 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the lookout points.

Overall, the Alakai Swamp Trail is a truly unique and rewarding hike that offers a diverse range of landscapes and an incredible variety of plant and animal life. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but for those who are up for the challenge, it’s an experience you won’t forget. So, if you’re planning a trip to Kauai and you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding hike, be sure to put the this hike on your list!
