The Puka Hike in Maui, also known as the “Huka to the Puka” hike, is a hidden treasure for those seeking an adventurous and less crowded hiking experience on their trip to Hawaii. This secret trail, nestled along the Hana Highway, may or may not end at O’Opuola Point. The exact location is a well-guarded secret, known only to locals who might reveal it after enough persuasion. This guide will provide you with a glimpse into this unique hiking experience.
Please note: Locals have gone to great lengths to keep the exact location hidden, to the point that it is difficult to ascertain where the hike actually starts. I have included a few videos that may give you context clues.
Your best bet might be to ask around to some of the locals.
The Journey Begins
The trailhead, marked by one of many nondescript gates in the area, leads you through a low-lying jungle for about 20 minutes before opening up to a view of a rocky outcropping and a small rocky beach in a valley below to your right. There’s a spur trail that apparently leads down to that beach, but it’s an adventure for another day.
As you approach the rocky outcropping, the terrain gets steeper and ropes are involved. The rope work here is challenging, requiring decent upper body strength. The ropes, exposed to the elements, can be a bit rough on the hands, so bringing gloves is a good idea.
Reaching the Bottom
Once you reach the bottom, you can work your way towards the left and around the corner to a sea cave. If the surf is not up, you can swim across the ‘channel’ to the other side. There are olivine pools and a very cool lava archway around the bend to the left. There’s another beach you can see from the archway, but it doesn’t look as inviting as the first one.
Safety and Respect
The Puka Hike in Maui is not for the faint-hearted. It’s important to respect the ocean and the trail. If you decide to swim across the ‘channel,’ be aware that the ocean can be unpredictable. Also, the trail can be steep and rocky, so it’s important to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.
The hike is best attempted in dry conditions due to the steepness of some parts of the trail and many exposed plant roots. Wet rocks can be challenging if you’re not wearing water shoes.
Leave No Trace
As with any hike, it’s important to respect the land. Pack in what you pack out and stay on the designated trails. This not only helps preserve the natural beauty of the area but also ensures the trail remains a secret for future adventurers to discover.
Final Thoughts
The Puka Hike in Maui is a unique and adventurous trail that offers a different kind of hiking experience. It’s a secret trail that’s growing in popularity, so if you’re lucky enough to find it, enjoy the solitude and the stunning views it offers. Remember, respect the land, and the land will reward you with an unforgettable experience.
